Eddie and I hope that you feel that Eudemonia has been a valuable and positive resource in your lives. We do our best to make sure that this store offers you a good value on everything you do here, and even more importantly, makes a positive impact on the local community here in Berkeley. However, you may not be aware that the store is being threatened by a new development project being pushed by UC Berkeley. The University of California intends to demolish large portions of the city blocks bounded by Oxford Street, University Ave, Shattuck, and Center street to build a Hotel/Conference center. What they intend to build where Eudemonia now stands is a parking structure to support the new hotel/conference center. If you believe the store has been a good thing in your life and in the life of downtown Berkeley, there are some very important things you can do which may make a difference and won't take much time. (For those of you under 18, please encourage your parents to do these things.)
- There is a Proposal in the City of Berkeley Landmarks Preservation Commission to designate the buildings between 2154 and 2160 University Avenue as landmarks. I encourage all of you to attend the public hearing on June 7th at 7:30 PM, located at the North Berkeley Senior Center at 1901 Hearst Avenue (cross street MLK). Please make your voice heard and tell the City and UC that you want Eudemonia to stay.
- Please write to the Mayor of Berkeley or your city council representative to let them know how you feel. Mayor Tom Bates' contact information is:
Mayor's Office 2180 Milvia Street Berkeley, CA 94704 (510) 981-7100 Email: mayor@ci.berkeley.ca.us You can find contact information for you city council representative at: http://www.ci.berkeley.ca.us/Elected/default.htm I've attached a sample letter that you could use. Please feel free to modify it or reuse it however you want.
I am writing to express my disapproval of the University of California's plan to demolish large portions of the city block bounded by University Street, Oxford Street, Addison Street and Shattuck Ave. In particular, I am concerned about the stores present between 2154 and 2160 University Ave. Our family frequents Eudemonia, a store at 2154 University Avenue, and we want that store to be able to stay in Berkeley at it's current location. The vibrancy of the store is both an important contributor to the life of downtown Berkeley and a community builder. We feel that it has a positive impact on our community and contributes in a good way to the downtown Berkeley environment. Please support the Proposal before the Landmarks Preservation Committee to designate 2154-2160 University Avenue as a landmark, and keep our support of Eudemonia in mind when considering the University's proposals to renovate downtown Berkeley.

If they turn it into a parking lot, we could start a riot in downtown berkeley as a protest statement! Or what if eudemonia say relocated to a bigger place near its current location so that it had more space and so it had alot more of attention? What am i talking about, Save eudemonia! Leave it where it is!

For those who don't read the news on the home page, the landmark thigie passed, so it'll be a bit harder for the UC to tear us down. I'd personally like to thank everyone who helped us out by signing the petition, thanks for all your help.
