Hello all,

After some thought, it seems like there are more and better reasons to run Extended for our next tournaments than Legacy. I'm inviting opinions from the community on this subject. Here are my thoughts so far:

- Building/testing decks is time consuming and a big barrier to people playing. If someone builds an extended deck, they can also use the same deck on MODO or when the season starts. Legacy decks are also harder to build than extended decks, and that discourages casual players.

- Extended is an easier format to learn, since there is more info online on how to build decks. That should also encourage more players to sign up.

- Extended is a cheaper format to build. This goes with point A. It also encourages people to buy singles from more recent sets, which is good for the store.

- I don't really like the idea of switching formats after 2 months. Again, these decks are hard to build. Someone might build a Type 1 deck for 9 tournaments, but it's less likely they'll build a Legacy deck for 3 tournaments (with less participation and prize support).

On the other hand, there are some reasons to run Legacy:

- There aren't many Legacy events around, so players who want to play will come for some distance to attend one.

- We can give away cool expensive cards for Legacy, while there aren't a lot of money cards for Extended. Thus, the prizes will be less glamorous (store credit or cash), although the total prize pool will still be the same.

- Legacy might be a more diverse and exciting format than Extended. Any deck that is legal in Extended is possible, plus many other old decks from past Extended seasons.

- People might want to play with their dual lands.

Any thoughts? I would like to get the format nailed down soon.

Cheers,
Tim

I'll play no matter which format it is. Really, I'd prefer extended to help practice for extended season.

Well, I'm fairly new to the game, but I'm going to have to say Legacy.

I looked at a few Extended decks and the format just doesn't appeal to me.

If anything, I think the supposed inaccessability of Legacy is what draws most people to the format: it weeds out the smacktards and makes for better games overall.

Legacy.

It's like T1 without Yawg Will.

12 year olds can make T1 decks with 10 proxies, plenty of people can make Legacy Decks (Still new territory) and I don't own good Extended Cards.

I'm one of those Vintage players who has enough old cards to build some decent Legacy decks but not enough middle-aged cards to build a decent Extended deck (I guess I could play Affinity, but that's about it...). So I vote for Legacy, though I see that you have some good reasons for considering Extended. If you go with Extended, I'm sure I'll play at least once to try it out, but I'd be more excited about Legacy (though it's all really just filler until the next Vintage series!!!).

I hope all y'all who are claiming that legacy would be better than extended actually show up for the tournaments. Big turn-outs are great, and weak turn-outs are, well, weak.

Here's hoping that, whatever the next series is, and it's looking like it will be Legacy, will be awesome.

My vote would go to LEGACY. I missed the last series and would like the opportunity to use my dual lands. I also believe that T1 and Legacy attracts a more mature crowd of players which makes for more casual but at the same time competitive play.

I vote Extended. I don't really play Legacy, and it wouldn't really bother me for the series to be Legacy. However, I really hope Eudemonia will start doing something like Extended, or Standard tournaments every Sunday. I personally know many people that would be interested in something like this. I have been hoping for Extended or Standard tournaments for a while, and I think Eudemonia would be a great place to have them. Not only would it be fun, but it would be quite useful for testing during Extended season.

On the subject of standard:

We've attempted standard many times. It's true that many people claim to be interested, and we get all kinds of response indicating that we'll get good turn-outs, but NOBODY ACTUALLY SHOWS UP.

It's clear that Standard is not destined to be our thing.

I am certain people would show up for Extended. Weekend tournaments are often popular, and one of the main reasons the Standard FNM was unpopular was because people didn't like choosing between draft and Standard.

We will almost certainly run some extended once November rolls around. However at the moment we have Legacy on the Calendar for 11am on Sept17th. With a guaranteed prize of $100 cash for first place.

Standard FNM was a flop, yes. But we've also tried standard weekend tornaments, which also flopped. It just doesn't work.

I never heard of the Standard weekend tournaments. I think Extended weekend tournaments would definetely work because they are quite uncommon and are a good way to test the format.

Another p9 series will probably be a summer thing, since the last two were.

The last two P9s started in early to mid-March, and it would be great if this year's does too.
