Hello everybody, and welcome to the somewhat abbreviated coverage of Eudemonia's Mox Jet tournament 2007 edition. This being memorial day weekend, I was unable to get a substitute for my lifeguard job, and so we join the action at the end of the swiss. After a relatively short 5-round tournament, a smallish 20 person field has turned into 8 still in contention for the top 8 prize. Among those eliminated is normally stellar “Loose” Luis Scott-Vargas, who lost a groaner of a 5th round to Galen Lemei playing Hulk Flash Vintage Edition, who, in the face of two Pithing Needles and a Leyline of the Void, attacked with a hardcast Protean Hulk enough times to win the game.

But enough about the ones who didn't make it. The top 8 you'll be hearing about today are:

Sam Sherman v. Michael Klemic
 -

Eric Campusano v. Galen Lemei
 -

David Ochoa v. Albert Ye
 -

and our feature match,

Vince Stevenson (Doomsday) v. Eirik Aune (Some combo deck with Tendrils)
 -

For this round, we join two players who we rarely see – Vince because I don't like him (just kidding) and Eirik, though he has a penchant for being entertaining, because he doesn't exactly play in all of these events. Eirik, with a very theatrical elbow smash, wins the coin flip and elects to play.

Game 1:
After a mulligan from Eirik, and a pair of them from Vince, we're ready to start. Eirik plays two permanents at once to get Tolarian Academy and a Mox Emerald on turn 1, and Vince leads with a Duress. Looking at Wheel of Fortune, Mind's Desire, Dark Ritual and Cabal Ritual, he elects to make Eirik discard wheel. Eirik draws, considers, plays a land, and says go, and Vince has a Brainstorm during his own main phase followed by a second Duress. This time, Eirik discards Mind's Desire. After some more Brainstorm style action, Vince drops a mox of his own and passes back.

Eirik is stuck on draw-go, Vince plays Vampiric Tutor, and on his own turn, he makes a move – Chromatic Sphere, Dark Ritual, Dark Ritual, Doomsday. His library becomes Ancestral Recall, Dark Ritual, Black Lotus, Mind's Desire, Research/Development. He loses Chromatic Sphere, draws 3 cards, makes some mana, and Desires. Research/Development puts 2 Tendrils of Agony into his library, and 1 is enough to finish off the Kurt Cobain look-alike from Norway.
Game Score: Vince 1, Eirik 0

Game 2:
Eirik has a spicy start this game, and plays land, Dark Ritual, Necropotence, Mox, draw 6 cards, discard Simian Spirit-Guide and Island. Vince tries a Duress, and Eirik FoWs. Vince finishes up his first turn with Tormod's Crypt.

Eirik goes Mana Vault, Mana Crypt, Mox Sapphire, Mind's Desire for 4 getting Mox Jet, Duress, Brainstorm, Wheel of Fortune. He plays the mox, taps out for Cabal Ritual, and wheels. Duress takes Vince's Doomsday. A Dark Ritual and a Tendrils later, Vince concedes in response.
Game Score: Vince 1, Eirik 1

Game 3:
Both players start this game with 5 cards by mutual agreement. Vince keeps, but Eirik decides to go to 4, being that he's on the draw and wants things to be fair. Vince plays land go, Eirik plays draw go, Vince plays draw go, Eirik plays a land and a Duress. Seeing Dark Ritual, Dark Ritual, Dark Ritual, Dark Ritual (that's right), Cabal Ritual, Black Lotus, and Force of Will, he takes the force.
 -
A few more draw-go turns later, Eirik goes Mox Sapphire, Sol Ring, Mana Vault, Demonic Tutor, Black Lotus, Cabal Ritual, Grim Tutor, Yawgmoth's Will.
Game Score: Vince 1, Eirik 2

Semifinals: Michal Klemic (“The Solution” or something like it) v. Galen Lemei (Hulk Flash Vintage Edition)

Game 1:
Galen, on the play, leads with land, Ancestral Recall. Michael has a Brainstorm on his turn, and then an Unmask, which gets FoW'ed. Galen plays land go, and Michael does too. Then Galen has a Mystical Tutor for Duress. Michael responds with Brainstorm and Galen looks at Force of Will, Dimir Cutpurse, Daze, Null Rod, Island. The force bites the dust. After a land, Galen plays Imperial Seal.

Michael has a Demonic Tutor for Unmask, and takes Galen's Flash over Summoner's Pact and Merchant Scroll. Galen tutors up another Flash and passes back to Michael, who plays draw go. Galen plays Summoner's Pact for Protean Hulk, Flash, and a while later, a large number of hasty Karmic Guides attack Michael.
Game Score: Michael 0, Galen 1

Game 2:
Michael plays a land and an Unmask, and Galen loses Demonic Tutor. When Galen plays Brainstorm, Michael responds by saccing a sac land and red blasting it. Michael plays land go and Galen plays an Elvish Spirit Guide. Sitting on two lands, Michael does nothing, and Galen gets an attack. Michael Demonic Tutors up a land and Galen gets another attack.

Michael plays an Order of the Ebon Hand, and the crowd goes wild.

Galen casts Flash, puts Protean Hulk into play, and Michael stifles its trigger. With Michael tapped out, Galen is able to attack him down to 12. We go into draw-go mode for a while, Galen tutors and plays Ancestral, and on his next turn, tutors Brainstorm, and plays it through Daze. Michael decides to back up his pump knight with Leyline of the Void. Galen plays some more land, and Michael adds a Dimir Cutpurse to his team. During his end step, Galen plays Echoing Truth on the leyline, and Michael forces. Galen uses Pact of Negation, Mystical Tutors for Pact of Negation, untaps, pays, removes a second Elvish Spirit Guide, plays Summoner's Pact for Hulk, Flash, win the game.
Game Score: Michael 0, Galen 2

Finals: Albert Ye (Suicide Black/Blue) v. Galen Lemei (Hulk Flash Vintage Edition)
 -

Game 1:
Albert wins the roll, and starts the game with Leyline of the Void in play. He then plays Duress, taking Pact of Negation. Galen has a Duress of his own, and takes out Albert's Demonic Tutor. Albert, stuck on 1 land, has to play draw-go for a turn, and Galen tutors up Ancestral Recall. He plays a Carrion Feeder, and Albert gets a second land to put out Dark Confidant. His next play, Phyrexian Negator, gets Dazed.

Galen plays and sacs Black Lotus for Protean Hulk hardcast. Albert draws another Negator, plays Echoing Truth on the Hulk, and attacks again (15 life for both players). Galen attacks Albert to 14, who then draws an extra Force of Will going to 9. An attack takes Galen to 13, and then a Negator joins the team. Galen, stuck without green or red mana with Spirit Guide, Protean Hulk, and Kiki-Jiki in his hand, has to pass back, and Albert attacks him to 6 after bob drops him to 5 for a Leyline. Galen draws and casts a Brainstorm, sacs a sac land, and passes back. Albert plays Brainstorm so he takes no damage from Bob, and attacks for the kill.
Finals: Albert 1, Galen 0

Game 2:
Galen starts with a Brainstorm. Albert has a Dark Confidant, and Galen Vampiric Tutors and then Merchant Scrolls for Flash. Albert attacks, and Galen untaps and plays Flash. In response, Albert plays Dark Ritual and lets Flash resolve. Protean Hulk goes to the graveyard and Albert responds to the trigger with Aven Mindcensor. Galen Forces, Albert Forces, and Galen plays Pact of Negation.
Finals: Albert 1, Galen 1

Game 3:
Albert keeps, Galen mulligans. Albert has Dark Ritual, confidant, burn, and Galen is a blue mana short of winning on turn 1. Albert goes to 15 from confidant, attacks, and Strip Mines. Galen plays draw go, and Albert taps out for an end of turn Brainstorm. Galen responds with Flash, and Albert counters. Brainstorm resolves.

Albert takes 1 for a Duress (13), attacks Galen to 16, and Duresses away Force of Will seeing 2 hulks and a Summoner's Pact. Albert takes 2 for a Meddling Mage, attacks Galen for 2, and passes. Galen is stuck on more draw-go, and Albert takes himself to 7 with confidant for leyline. Galen drops to 12, and Albert goes to 6. Duress takes Galen's new Force of Will, leaving maximum Hulk action and Daze. Bob drops Albert to 4, and Galen goes to 8.

Albert reveals a Leyline of the Void and loses the game.
Finals: Albert 1, Galen 2
