Player Profile: Eirik Aune
 -
Ryan: When did you start playing magic?
Eirik: In 5th grade, so I guess that was almost 10 years ago.

R: How does it feel to know that I've been playing magic longer than you?
E: You're older. That makes me feel kinda good.

R: I'm not older. My 20th birthday was only 2 weeks ago.
E: Ooooooooh. I'm old, I guess.

R: What's your favorite magic card?
E: It's gotta be Duress, I think. No wait, screw that. Gifts by far.

R: What's your favorite bad magic card? Like, something fun that would never fly in a tournament.
E: Nicol Bolas.

R: I bet you liked old school Extended, where you could play Nicol Bolas Corpse Dance and stuff.
E: Actually, I was in Malaysia when that was legal. In fact, one of the decks I always wanted to play was Pox.

R: What are you playing today?
E: Sliver Flash.

R: Wow, I miss a tournament and a completely new archetype develops. Go figure.
E: They shouldn't have restricted Gifts. That upset me.

R: Does restricting gifts really kill the archetype?
E: I think so. Like, why would you play a deck that revolves around 1 Gifts when you can play a deck that revolves around 4 Gushes instead?

R: Well, I guess this format will be very different from the one we've all grown accustomed to in my previous reports. Any parting words?
E: Yay beer.

Hello everybody, and sorry for my long break. I have, however, returned by popular demand and am back to my old habit of writing these tournament report thingies. Without further ado, I give you the Eudemonia Power Nine 2007 Ancestral Recall tournament. With 31 players vying for an opportunity to walk away with an Ancestral Recall, the players hands are shaking as they shuffle their cards for the first round. With the restriction of Gifts and the return of Gush to the format, type one is wide open, so I expect we'll see a lot of interesting tech today.

Round one brings us two players who have rarely been in the spotlight.
Brett Allen (Gro-a-tog) v. Dan Messineo (Gro-a-tog)
 -
Game 1:
Brett starts things in typical type 1 fashion with a turn 1 land, upkeep Ancestral Recall. He takes the early lead on cards as on his second turn, he follows it up with a Brainstorm and Duress, while Dan has played nothing. Dan's hand gets rearranged a little, with Brainstorm in response to Duress, but that doesn't save his own Duress from being ripped out of his hand.

Dan cycles a Time Walk on his second turn, plays a third land, and searches up Force of Will with a Merchant Scroll. A Tormod's Crypt gets out on the table, and Brett tries a Vampiric Tutor on his own upkeep, netting himself a Tropical Island. Dan's dryad gets countered, both players Gush, and we're back to turn 2 again. Dan resolves a Fastbond, followed by a Demonic Tutor. Dan responds to Duress with Ancestral Recall, which gets Misdirected, which gets Forced, which gets Drained. Brett draws 3 cards, Duress sees only Doctor Teeth, and Brett takes this opportunity to cast Quirion Dryad, taking 4 mana burn.

Dan resolves his Psychatog, Brett gets a 'tog of his own, but his graveyard gets removed from the game by the Crypti di Tormod. The 'togs bash into each other with no casualties, Brett plays Gush, followed by Cunning Wish for his now-removed Ancestral Recall, which gets Misdirected to Dan, and Quirion Dryad goes to town, reducing Dan to 10 life. Dan red blasts the opposing tog, plays Gush, and gets in there for the win.
Game Score: Brett 0, Dan 1

Game 2:
Dan starts this game with a mulligan, and both players start up their card-selecting engines. Brett finds himself stuck on 1 land despite 2 Brainstorms, and Dan plays Demonic Tutor with the help of a Mox Jet. Ancestral Recall gets Forced gets Pyroblasted gets Forced, and Brett plays Opt, but does not find himself a land. After a few turns of Draw-go, Brett finds himself a fetchland and Duresses. When Brett finds himself staring down a grinning demon child goblin thing, he plays Demonic Tutor and Ancestral Recall, finding himself a mind-eater of his own for his next turn.

Brett seems ready to make his move, and plays Repeal on Dan's 'tog. As it turns out, Dan has a Misdirection, and Brett repeals his own tog. But wait! Brett has a Misdirection as well, and it is Dan's dental patient after all that returns to its owner's hand. Brett Snuffs Out the opposing Dryad, attacks, and grows his psychatog to epic proportions.
Game Score: Brett 1, Dan 1

Game 3:
Dan leads with land, mox, Dryad. Brett Forces, Dan Forces back. Duress takes out Dan's Ancestral Recall, and then Brett's Force of Will number 2. Dryad swings for 2, then 3 after a Merchant Scroll for another Force. Brett, stuck on 1 land again, attempts to Snuff Out the life of the kindly forest dryad in response to Dan's Merchant Scroll, reducing himself to 9, but Dan has a Gush to back up his Force of Will. The scroll will get a brainstorm, and the dryad attacks for 5.

Brett needs an answer now, or at least a land, but he doesn't get what he needs, and packs up.
Game Score: Brett 1, Dan 2

Round 2: Jeff “F.O.B.” Huang () v. Nate “Nate-Dizzle” Schwartz (Goblins)
 -
Game 1:
Both players start this game with Leyline of the Void in play. Jeff on the play, has Tundra and Ancestral Recall. Nate has a truly awesome start of Black Lotus, Goblin Lackey, Aether Vial, Goblin Lackey, Wasteland. Jeff has naught but a land for his second turn, and Nate gets in with both lackeys, but because he is, in his own words, a scrub, he does not put any goblins into play for free. On Jeff's next turn, he makes a Meddling Mage naming Red Elemental Blast.

On Nate-Dizzle's next attack, one lackey goes down, but the remaining lackey spawns another in some kind of primordial soup binary fizzion bacteria reproduction process. Dark Confidant joins Jeff's team, and Nate has nothing. Confidant gets a Swords to Plowshares, and on the attack, Nate attempts to trade one of his rapidly-multiplying Lackeys for the Confidant, but trades for a Swords to Plowshares instead. When the remaining Lackey attacks, a Stifle prevents it from breeding any more filthy green-skinned offspring, and an attack brings Nate to 15.

Aether vial gets a Goblin Warchief in there, and an instant-speed Aven Mindcensor gets in the way of the Warchief, but the highly fecund lackey is joined by a Piledriver of its kind. Confidant reveals Confidant, and Jeff plays a third Confidant. If I were him, I'd be very Confidant in my chances of winning. Madam Bovary is a classic piece of literature which concerns the archetype of the Confidant. Confidant Confidant Confidant.

Jeff draws a bunch of cards, removes the piledriver with Swords to Plowshares, and trades a Confidant for the now reproductively exhausted Goblin Lackey. With Nate at 10, Confidant reduces Jeff to 7. An attack brings Nate to 4, and a Stifle prevents Siege-Gang Commander from coming into play via Nate's vial.
Game Score: Jeff 1, Nate 0

Game 2:
Nate goes Mountain, Mox, Goblin Piledriver, and Jeff goes Tundr, Mox, Dark Confidant. A wasteland and a Sudden Shock all but demolish Jeff's board, but he has a new land and a new Confidant. Force of Will cook's Goblin Warchief's goose, and Jeff draws some extra cards. A Black Lotus gets him Kataki and Jotun Grunt, but the highly prolific Goblin Lackey reappears! Jotun Grunt reduces Nate to 14, and a Goblin Warchief joins the battle. The lackey sires a Goblin Ringleader, who gets started early in his life of crime, recruiting 3 hoodlums to Nate's gang.

Jeff's ice troll takes Nate-Dizzle down to 10, and then the Confidant trades with the Goblin Lackey in the next battle. However, his progeny are not yet finished, as Goblin Piledriver eats a Spell Snare, yet a second Lackey comes into play. A Pyrokinesis destroy's Ice Troll number 1 for free, but he is soon replaced by an equally-menacing grunting brother-in-arms, who meets his maker when Goblin Ringleader instantaneously shocks him. However, a third Jotun Grunt comes out, and Nate spawns another Lackey. The lackeys are no match, however, for Jeff's army of one and Nate-dizzle drops to 8.

Jeff's next attack sees Meddling Mage trading for the pair of Lackeys while the Jotun Grunt reduces his life to 4, sealing the deal in the folllowing turn.
Game Score: Jeff 2, Nate 0

Round 3: Austin Martinez (Auriok Salvagers) v. Nicholas Weed (Auriok Salvagers)
 -
In a strange twist of fate, the two Auriok Salvagers players have been paired this round, and are also the feature match!

Game 1:
Nick defies convention by allowing Austin to play first despite winning the die roll, and Austin takes a mulligan. Austin just has a land, and Nick goes land, mox, Sol Ring, cycle Aether Spellbomb. Austin plays Brainstorm, and Nick responds with Mystical Tutor for Gifts Ungiven. Both spells resolve. Austin's land is soon joined by a Sol Ring which allows him to cast a Trinket Mage and retrieve a Black Lotus. The lotus produces a Dark Confidant, which gets countered by Force of Will.

Nick uses his very-developed mana to play Gifts Ungiven for Black Lotus, Vampiric Tutor, Demonic Tutor, Pyrite Spellbomb. The tutors go to hand, the artifacts to graveyard, and Nick casts Vampiric Tutor. Austin, however, cancels it all out with a Time Spiral on his turn.

Nick restarts his game with Auriok Salvagers. Austin responds with Brainstorm, and then Force of Will. Nick has a Brainstorm of his own, however, followed by a Misriection. Austin has a Misdirection of his own, and the Salvagers gets countered. A second Trinket Mage joins Austin's team, as does a Sensei's Divining Top. Nick finds himself another Salvagers with a Demonic Tutor, and this one gets into play.

A third Trinket Mage finds its way onto Austin's side of the table. This one brings a Black Lotus with it, and Austin plays an Aether Spellbomb and passes the turn. Nick wastes a tundra and passes. Austin finds himself a Salvager, which Nick counters, but follows it up with a Dark Confidant. Nick plays a Trinket Mage himself, which gets a Tormod's Crypt. The crypt immediately goes after Austin's graveyard.

On Austin's turn, he unsummons the opposing salvagers and attacks with his 3 mages, 2 of which get through. The following attack drops Nick to 1 life and then he Timetwisters. There is nothing in his new hand to save him and it's time for game 2.
Game Score: Austin 1, Nick 0

Game 2:
Nick changes his mind and decides to play first this game. Austin starts with a Leyline of the Void in play, and responds to Nick's turn 2 Wasteland with a Brainstorm. Nick plays Demonic Tutor, and Austin responds with cracking a fetchland into yet another Brainstorm. The tutor resolves, and on Austin's turn, he plays Dark Confidant, and then tries to counter a Trinket Mage with Force of Will only to get Forced back. Nick gets Engineered Explosives.

Austin gets out an Aether Spellbomb and Nick plays a second Trinket Mage, this time fetching a Mox Sapphire. Nick wastes Austin's Tolarian Academy, and Austin responds with Mystical Tutor for Ancestral Recall. Nick's attack brings Austin to 16, and Austin draws 3 extra cards, then cycling his spellbomb. Nick plays a Serra Avenger and another Trinket Mage for a Divining Top. Austin drops to 12 on the attack, then to 7 on his upkeep. Seeing nothing that he wants to see, Austin concedes.
Game Score: Austin 1, Nick 1

Game 3:
Austin has no lands, but he does have two moxes, but nothing else. Nick has a land, a mox, a Divining Top, and a Pyrite Spellbomb. Austin is stuck with no lands and nothing playable, and Nick cycles some cards, uses Divining Top, etc. Then he plays Aven Mindcensor. Continuing the goldfish game, Nick plays Trinket Mage and a Serra Avenger.

Austin finally finds an island, and makes a Trinket Mage for a top. Time is called, and Nick's attack brings him to 13 when the trinket mages trade. Nick makes a Meddling Mage naming Dark Confidant, and Austin drops to 7 on the attack. Austin finds another Trinket Mage, which gets Black Lotus. On the second to last turn, Nick attacks Austin down to 1 life with his avengers, and on the final turn of the game, Austin plays Tinker, gets Darksteel Colossus, and accepts the draw.
Game Score: Austin 1, Nick 1 – Draw

Round 4: Mike Painter (Stax) v. Jeff Nielson (some crazy deck with workshops)
 -
Jeff rocks out just a little too hard for my camera...
Game 1:
Mike leads with Workshop, Sol Ring, Smokestack. Jeff has Workshop, Mox Ruby, Sphere of Resistance, Cranial Plating. Mike gets out a Goblin Welder on his second turn, and Jeff sacrifices his sphere. Then he plays a Genesis Chamber and an Ornithopter, making a token. A Wasteland takes out Mike's 'shop, and then he sacrifices his city of brass, makes a new one, and Ancestral Recalls himself. With Smokestack on 2 counters, he passes the turn.

Fortunately for Jeff, Genesis Chamber is supplying him with permanents to sacrifice to Smokestack, so he loses only his Mox as far as actual cards go. Mike goes down to just his welder and his stack, and charges up a third counter. After Jeff sacrifices down to just a shop, Mike plays Vampiric Tutor and then welds his stack into a Sphere of Resistance. Jeff gets out a Crucible of Worlds, which Mike welds into a Sphere of Resistance. Jeff attacks with his Blinkmoth Nexus and plays a Sol Ring as well as a second Mishra's Workshop and a Black Lotus.

Michael similarly develops his board with a Mishra's Factory. Both players continue to play mana artifacts. Jeff wastes and Ghost Quarterses a couple of Mike's lands, Mike gets a Smokestack charged up to 3 counters, and the game is all but reset once again. Mike has the upper hand thanks to his Goblin Welder, though, and so Jeff concedes rather than watch the game grind to its inevitable conclusion.
Game Score: Mike 1, Jeff 0

Game 2:
Jeff starts it up with Wasteland, Sol Ring, Chalice of the Void (1), Ornithopter. Mike goes land, go. Jeff has nothing on his second turn, so Mike gets to replace the land that Jeff immediately wasted, and play a Sphere of Resistance. Jeff finds himself a Blinkmoth Nexus, which Mike wastes, and then Jeff rips a Mishra's Workshop and pumps out a Crucible of worlds.

Jeff gets out a Myr Enforcer and his wasteland lock is enough to carry it while he beats down.
Game Score: Mike 1, Jeff 1

Game 3:
Mike goes Workshop, Sol Ring, Trinisphere, and Jeff has a wasteland. Mike plays a turn 2 Viashino Heretic via City of Brass, much to Jeff's dismay, followed by a Wasteland on Jeff's new land and a Demonic Tutor. Jeff topdecks a Workshop and plays Metalworker. Mike kills the worker with his heretic, and Jeff one-ups himself by topdecking a Crucible of Worlds, which allows him to replay Wasteland taking out Mike's red source.

Mike, however, has a Gemstone Mine which allows him to make red mana to destroy Jeff's newfound Crucible, and when Mike strips away Jeff's workshop, Jeff concedes.
Game Score: Mike 2, Jeff 1

Round 5: Matthew Menard (Flash) v. Nate Schwartz (Goblins!)
 -

Game 1:
This match, we look at two of the 3-1 players in a must-play duel for top 8 position. Nate doesn't seem to grasp the gravity of the situation though, as during the pre-match shuffling, he sings the chorus to “stacy's mom” very loudly and makes jokes about Goodfellas. Matthew, on the other hand, is all business and plays the Zeppo to Nate's Harpo. Harpo starts the game with Leyline of the Void in play. Zeppo leads off with fetch, Breeding Pool untapped, Virulent Sliver. Harpo goes land, Goblin Lackey. On Zeppo's turn, he plays land go, and then Harpo cycles Gempalm Incinerator to kill the sliver and produces a Goblin Warchief with his lackey. A Goblin Piledriver gets countered, and the attack drops Matt to 12 as well as making a new piledriver.

Nate-dizzle uses a couple wastelands to completely eliminate Matt's lands, and attacks him down to 4. It's panic time for Matt, and he plays and sacrifices Black Lotus to play Ancestral Recall, seeing nothing, and concedes.
Game Score: Matt 0, Nate 1

Game 2:
Once again, Harpo Marx starts with Leyline of the Void in play. This time, Matt leads with fetch, untapped Breeding Pool, mox, Merchant Scroll for ancestral. Nate has a turn 1 Aether Vial. Matt casts his recall on turn 2, draws cards, plays a Mox Jet, a fetchland, and another Merchant Scroll, this time for Flash. Matt plays out two Virulent Slivers. Nate takes out one sliver by cycling Gempalm Incinerator after vialing out Goblin Piledriver. Matt gets himself another poison sliver and a Dark Confidant, and Nate increases his force by two Goblin Warchiefs and a Goblin Lackey.

The Confidant takes Matt to 12, and he plays yet another Merchant Scroll, this time for Brainstorm. Nate decides it's time to attack, and trades a Warchief for both of Matt's slivers. During Matt's upkeep, Nate uses Rishadan Port to tap down Underground Sea. In response, Matt taps for mana, draws his Confidant card, and plays Vampiric Tutor. Nate attacks Matt down to 7, losing his piledriver, and once again, taps a land during Matt's upkeep.

Matt, apparently, decides he has to do something soon. A fetchland takes him to 6 and he Flashes in Protean Hulk the expensive way. Nate can't push through for a few turns and gets taken to 14. Nate attacks Matt down to 4 while the Hulk is tapped.

Then both players stare deeply into each others eyes for a bit. Eventually, Matt breaks the sexual tension by playing Mystical Tutor for Brainstorm, and then attacks Nate down to 7. Nate tries an attack, but Matt Flashes in a Dark Confidant to block and takes no damage. Matt plays land go, and Nate wastes a land, attacks Matt down to 3 with a lackey, and passes back. Matt plays land go again, and Nate attacks with a lackey again. Matt blocks, the lackey dies, giving Nate threshold, and then Nate is able to throw two Barbarian Rings at his opponent to win the game and the match.
Game Score: Matt 0, Nate 2

Top 8:
Austin Martinez v. Cory Redmond

Nate Schwartz v. Michael Klemic
 -
Daniel Kaltenbach v. Mike Painter
 -
and our feature match...

Top 8: Flavio Zelenka (“The John Foster Solution”) v. Ricky Sidher (“Way Faster than The John Foster Solution”)
 -
Game 1:
Flavio leads with Taiga go. Ricky plays a fetchland and passes back, and Flavio does a free Land Grant showing two Belchers, Brainstorm, Pyroblast, Lotus Petal, Simian Spirit Guide. The land grant resolves, and Flavio makes a Goblin Charbelcher. He, however, lacks the mana to activate it so Ricky is safe for now.

Ricky plays Vampiric Tutor, and then on his turn, Fastbond, Gush, lands, Quirion Dryad, Gush, lands, Quirion Dryad, Imperial Seal, Gush, lands, Merchant Scroll, Gush, lands, Time Walk, untap, Sleight of Hand, Sleight of Hand, fetchland, Sleight of Hand, fetchland, Duress, attack for 21 with an 11/11 and 10/10.
Game Score: Flavio 0, Ricky 1

Game 2:
Flavio has a land and a lotus petal, and Ricky seems off to another fast start, with Land, Black Lotus, Mox Jet, but he doesn't follow that up with anything. Flavio plays a turn 2 Tinder Wall, sac, sac petal, Goblin Charbelcher. Ricky counters that with Force of Will and then plays a 'tog. Flavio gets off an Oxidize on Ricky's lotus, and Ricky starts thinking about a dream that he had last night, about running away to the new world and meeting a shamanistic tribe. There, he traded the secrets of wizardry for their shamanistic healing secrets and profited greatly as a result. Then, the shaman transformed into a gigantic angel-food cake with strawberry topping, but the cake was rotten. In fact, it had been rotten for quite a long time, and the strawberries were soft and fermented-smelling.

When he returned to consciousness, Ricky had let a Xantid Swarm resolve on the other side of the table “****,” he says to himself. “I'll just have to attack with Psychatog some more.” Then Ricky resolves a Pithing Needle on Goblin Charbelcher as Flavio makes a second cloud of annoying insects and a Chromatic Star, which he cycles. Ricky gets out a Quirion Dryad.

After a few attacks, Flavio is down to 11 life. He decides that this is his chance. He makes his move. After attacking with buzzing bees, he plays Black Lotus, Rite of Flame, Land Grant, Empty the Warrens for 8 gobbos. Then he passes back. Ricky plays Fastbond, Gush, Yawgmoth's Will, Imperial Seal, land, Gush, lands, Gush, Time Walk, Brainstorm, fetchland, Brainstorm, Merchant Scroll for Gush, land, Psychatog, Gush, land, attack, Berserk over the goblin blockers.
Game Score: Flavio 0, Ricky 2

Semifinals: Michael Klemic () v. Mike Painter ()

Game 1:
Mike is on the play after a mulligan, and leads with Leyline of the Void, City of Brass, Goblin Welder. Michael goes Wasteland, Black Lotus, Goblin Lackey, Mogg Fanatic, Goblin Piledriver. Mike doesn't have much to do on his second turn, merely playing a land, and Michael goes straight to attacking with his three men for 6, sacrificing the fanatic before blockers to kill the welder. He lackeys in a Warchief, and then makes an Aether Vial.

Mike makes a Triskelion, which trades for Piledriver and Lackey and a newly made Fanatic. Michael is now on no lands because he uses his wasteland on Mike's workshop, and Mike used a wasteland on Michael's Barbarian Ring. It is a standoff, with Michael's two Goblin Warchiefs staring down Mike's Mishra's Factory. Eventually, Michael finds Mana Crypt and Rishadan Port, and is able to tap down the factory and attack for 4. Mike casts Vampiric Tutor and on his turn, Tinkers his newly played Mana Crypt into a Platinum Angel. He follows that up with a Trinisphere.

Michael stands pat, and Mike attacks with his angel, taking Michael to 10. Crypt takes him to 7, and an attack takes Mike to negative 1. Mike attacks back, and Michael concedes upon seeing his next draw.
Game Score: Mike 1, Michael 0

Game 2:
Michael goes fetchland, lackey, go. Mike has Mishra's Workshop, Mox Pearl, JUGGERNAUT. Michael plays aether vial and passes, and Mike untaps, plays workshop number 2, Crucible of Worlds, Sphere of Resistance. Lackey attacks and makes Siege-Gang Commander. A goblin token gets in the way of the JUGGERNAUT, and is horribly maimed as it is crushed under its gigantic wheels or tank treads or whatever.

Lackey gets in there, along with the whole siege-gang, and spawns yet another Siege-Gang Commander. Michael vials in a Goblin Warchief and wins the game.
Game Score: Mike 1, Michael 1

Game 3:
Mike starts with a Goblin Welder, and Michael with an Aether Vial. Turn 2 sees a Powder Keg from Mike and a Rishadan Port from Michael, which immediately starts going after City of Brass. Mike makes another land, and Michael gets out a Goblin Matron which tutors for Goblin Ringleader. Mike takes himself down to 16 to play Crucible of Worlds, and Michael vials Goblin Warchief and plays Siege-Gang Commander. His attack takes Mike down to 10 as Mike blocks with his welder, sacrifices his powder keg to blow up Aether Vial, and welds it back in in exchange for his Crucible.

A Balance destroys the team of red men, but Michael restocks with a Goblin Ringleader getting Stingscourger, Goblin Matron, Goblin Lackey which attacks Mike down to 7. Mike is unable to play his cards, and Michael keeps up the assault. Soon, Michael is through to the finals.
Game Score: Mike 1, Michael 2

Finals: Michael Klemic (Goblins) v. Ricky Sidher (Gro-a-tog)

Game 1:
Michael Leads with Wasteland, Mox Ruby, and Ricky counters the ruby with Force of Will. On ricky's turn, he plays a fetchland and passes, and Michael adds a second wasteland to his pile. Ricky gets out a tropical island, plays Sleight of hand, agonizes for a few seconds, and gets the trop wasted. In response, he fetches and Gushes both of his lands back to his hand. He discards Duress and we're on Michael's turn.

Michael is stuck with no red mana and plays draw-go, and Ricky plays Duress to see Ringleader, Piledriver, Matron, Siege-Gang Commander, and Stingscourger. Michael's remaining wasteland goes after Ricky's Underground Sea. A mystical tutor finds him an Ancestral Recall, and he draws some cards. Ricky is stuck on one land, however, and so is unable to get a decisive lead except in card selection. Michael, however, has none at all, and so Ricky gets to play solitaire for now. After a few turns of digging, Ricky finds himself a fetchland, and plays Imperial Seal. On his next turn, he gets out Fastbond. The rest of his turn is Gush, land, Dryad, and something very strange happens to my computer. Ricky plays some more lands and two more Gush, followed by a mox emerald, and a Yawgmoth's Will. Michael concedes.
Game Score: Michael 0, Ricky 1

Game 2:
Michael's turn 1 Lackey gets FoW'ed, but he follows it up with Mana Crypt and Aether Vial and Ricky plays fetchland, mox sapphire, mox jet, Quirion Dryad, go. Michael suddenly shocks Quirion Dryad and passes back. Soon, Ricky has a Psychatog. Michael takes damage from his crypt for the second time and plays Goblin Matron. In resopnse, Ricky floats mana and Gushes. With his mana, he plays Mystical Tutor for the usual Ancestral Recall. The Matron resolves, and Michael forgets to search.

On Ricky's next turn, he gets out a Quirion Dryad, Ancestral Recalls, and attacks for 9 by discarding a few cards and removing his graveyard from the game. His attack next turn kills Michael.
Game Score: Michael 0, Ricky 2
