Tournament report: 5/21 Type 1 Mox Jet

Very few players are here for this one, unfortunately. Regionals was yesterday, and most of the store’s regulars decided they were all magic-ed out for the weekend and didn’t show. Lamers. Who would miss a type 1 just to attend a huge type 2? Come on, here.

Round 1: Jonathan Pearlman (that crazy dredge deck) v. Austin Martinez (some kind of control deck with Trinket Mage. It may or may not have Auriok Salvagers)

Jonathan: Not only do I have a feature match, but I don’t have an opponent for it.
Me: This will be a very exciting feature match.

Austin shows up eventually, and the players shake hands and wish each other good luck. They chat about regionals (damn the bad formats!) and take a very long time to shuffle (it is the first round, after all). Let’s hope my awesome coverage incites more players to show up next time. Due to the small turnout, this tournament will go 4 swiss rounds with a cut to the top 4 and single elimination semifinals.

Game 1:
After a brief complaint about his opponent’s shuffling technique, Jonathan sets aside 7 cards, and his opponent looks at his and does not mulligan. Jonathan also keeps, and Austin starts it off with a Mox Pearl, which resolves, a Mox Sapphire, which also resolves, and then a Mana Crypt. He taps the pearl for a Sensei’s Divining Top, and the sapphire and crypt for a Trinket Mage, which gets him a Black Lotus. The next card out of his hand is the lotus, which he sacrifices for blue mana. He uses one to activate Sensei’s Divining Top and the other two for a Time Walk. He draws a card for his Time Walk turn, takes damage from Mana Crypt (in the wrong order), and attacks with Trinket Mage.

Jonathan begins his first turn with Underground Sea, which he taps for Ancestral Recall targeting himself. Austin responds with a Top activation. The broken card resolves, and is followed by Lotus Petal. During his cleanup step, Jonatan discards Stinkweed Imp to the consternation of his opponent, who begins his turn by drawing a card and ends it by attacking with Trinket Mage, playing a Tundra, and playing Meddling Mage, which names “Ichorid.”

Jonathan replaces his draw with dredging Stinkweed Imp, which sends 2 Ashen Ghouls, an Imperial Seal, and a pair of Bazaars of Baghdad to his graveyard. He plays Gemstone Mine and Stinkweed Imp, sacrificing his Lotus Petal.

Austin uses Sensei’s Divining Top a couple times, and untaps for his turn. He draws a card, uses Top again, and declines to attack. Jonathan casts Brainstorm during his main phase and plays Cabal Therapy using his newfound Gemstone Mine. He names (and hits) Force of Will, following it up with Putrid Imp, which gets Mana Drained off the top of Austin’s library. Austin draws, replays, and activates his Top a couple times.

Jonathan breezes through his upkeep and draw steps, plays City of Brass, and says simply “go.” Austin uses his Top during his main phase, uses it to draw a card, and plays Lotus Petal. Jonathan remarks that he must have Yawgmoth’s Will, but if he does, Austin doesn’t play it. Jonathan casts and attacks with Ashen Ghoul, taking Austin down to 8 (Mana Crypt has done a lot of damage so far this game).

Austin re-casts his Top, following it up with an Auriok Salvagers. He taps his Tundra and Lotus Petal to activate it, returning Black Lotus to his hand, and makes a bunch of mana. Then he plays Dimir Guildmage, makes Jonathan discard his hand, and draws a bunch of cards, after which he makes Jonathan draw a significantly larger number of cards. The players prepare for game 2.

Game Score: Austin 1, Jonathan 0

Game 2:
Jonathan asks if Sensei’s Divining Top is restricted in Type 1, and I remark that it ought to be. Austin confesses that he added the Top as an afterthought, in the car on the way here. After shuffling, Jonathan wishes Austin good luck, and announces that he will keep his first 7 cards, as does Austin. The first turn of the game sees Jonathan playing a Mox Sapphire, followed by Bazaar of Baghdad, which he activates discarding Ashen Ghoul, Bazaar of Baghdad, and Lotus Petal. Tapping his Mox Sapphire, he casts Brainstorm followed by Mox Jet and Chalice of the Void with 0 counters.

Austin’s first turn is basic swamp, Sensei’s Divining Top. Jonathan casts Vampiric Tutor during the end step, draws his awesome card, and plays Ancestral Recall targeting himself, which he follows up with a Bazaar activation discarding Golgari Grave-troll, Ichorid, and City of Brass. He follows that up with Cabal Therapy naming Tormod’s Crypt, which misses but sees three Trinket Mages, and is done. Austin activates his top using his swamp, plays Flooded strand, and is done.

Jonathan activates Bazaar of Baghdad, dredging Golgari Grave-Troll, and begins his turn by responding to his Ichorid’s triggered abilities with a Bazaar of Baghdad activation dredging a grave-troll and a stinkweed. Jonathan returns his Ashen Ghoul to play, and resolves his Ichorid’s abilities. He then attacks for 9, and sacrifices an Ichorid to flashback his Cabal Therapy. Austin responds by sacrificing his Flooded Strand to get Tundra. The Cabal Therapy resolves, which makes Austin discard a set of 4 Trinket Mages. Austin blinds a second flashed-back therapy by playing his Brainstorm, and Jonathan misses with his choice of Echoing Truth. Austin begins his turn by activating Sensei’s Divining Top and ends it by conceding.

Game Score: Austin 1, Jonathan 1

Game 3:
Jonathan: “He’s playing first again!”
Me: “Dude, who does that?!”
Jonathan: “I don’t know, I only ever play first once in a match!”

Austin keeps his first set of cards, as does Jonathan. Austin gets it started with Mana Crypt, Sol Ring, Polluted Delta, sacrifice for Tundra, Trinket Mage fetching Tormod’s Crypt, Pyrite Spellbomb, Tormod’s Crypt.

Jonathan draws a card, plays Gemstone Mine, and casts Cabal Therapy, which resolves and misses Force of Will, but sees Pithing Needle and a basic swamp. Austin takes 3 from his Mana Crypt, draws a card, attacks with Trinket Mage, and taps his land to sacrifice his spellbomb and draw a card. He taps Sol Ring to play Pithing Needle naming Cabal Therapy, and then plays Dark Confidant with his extra colorless and his newfound basic swamp. After a brief confusion, Austin realizes that flashback is not an activated ability and is unaffected by the Needle. Jonathan plays and activates Bazaar of Baghdad, discarding Ashen Ghoul, Ichorid, and Stinkweed Imp. He then taps his mine to play Putrid Imp, and plays Chalice of the Void with 0 counters on it.

Austin decides to flip for the crypt first, and doesn’t take anything. The Confidant, however, deals him 2 for a Meddling Mage, and reduces his life total to 14. Austin then plays Meddling Mage naming Golgari Grave-Troll. Jonathan begins his turn, stacks his Ichorid trigger, and Austin declines to respond. Jonathan returns Ichorid to play, removing Stinkweed Imp from the game. He draws his card for the turn, plays a second Gemstone Mine, and attacks with Ichorid, reducing Austin’s life total to 11. He then flashes back Cabal Therapy, sacrificing his Ichorid, and names Mana Drain, which misses, but he sees Ancient Tomb. A bazaar activation later, Jonathan casts Time Walk, and Austin sacrifices Tormod’s Crypt targeting Jonathan.

Jonathan takes his extra turn, draws a card, plays a second Bazaar, and is done. Dark Confidant deals Austin 2 damage for Mana Drain, and Mana Crypt hits him for another 3, reducing his life total to 6. Austin attacks with Meddling Mage, Trinket Mage, and Dark Confidant. Jonathan takes the damage, dropping to 12 life. Austin plays Meddling Mage number 2, this time naming Brainstorm. During the end step, Jonathan uses his two Bazaars of Baghdad, dumping an Ichorid and Putrid Imp. Responding to Ichorid’s Trigger, Jonathan activates his two Bazaars of Baghdad dredging a Golgari Grave-Troll. Ichorid returns to play, removing Putrid Imp, and Jonathan replaces his draw with a Golgari Grave-Troll. He discards his grave-troll to make Putrid Imp fly, and attacks. Austin takes 2 from Putrid Imp, dropping to 4, and Dark Confidant hits him for 3 with a Trinket Mage. Mana Crypt finishes the job.

Game Score: Austin 1, Jonathan 2

Round 2: Michael Klemic (Counter-Slaver) v. Marco Barreno (TPS with Dark Confidant and Mind’s Desire)

Game 1:
Marco keeps his first 7 cards and begins the game with Swamp, Mox Pearl, go. Michael plays Island, Mox Jet, Tormod’s Crypt, go, and Marco plays Vampiric Tutor which gets Tolarian Academy face down. Marco’s second turn is Mana Crypt, Tolarian Academy, Ancestral Recall, Brainstorm, and is done.

Michael fires back with Rack and Ruin on Marco’s Pearl and Mana Crypt, which resolves. Marco plays Lotus Petal, Polluted Delta for Underground Sea, Brainstorm, Mox Sapphire, Mox Emerald, and Michael plays Draw go. Marco plays Land go, and on his end step, Michael plays Thirst for Knowledge, to which Marco responds with a hardcast Force of Will. Michael plays Jester’s Cap go, and Marco sacrifices Polluted Delta. Marco taps his Academy and plays Rebuild. He gets his library removed by Tormod’s Crypt in response. 2 replayed moxes later, Marco is done with his turn. Michael plays draw go yet again, as does Marco. A brainstorm later, Michael is done with his next turn. On Marco’s end step, Michael plays Ancestral Recall, which Marco counters with yet another 5-mana Force of Will, only to find a 0-mana Force of Will.

Michael replays his Jester’s Cap with a Mana Crypt, and activates it to cause Marco to concede.

Game Score: Michael 1, Marco 0

Game 2:
Both players keep their first 7 again, and Marco plays Swamp, Dark Ritual, Duress, taking Brainstorm out of a hand of Library, Volcanic Island, Tinker, Pyroblast, Thirst for Knowledge. Confidant deals 1 to Marco in exchange for a Brainstorm, and Marco plays a second Dark Ritual, this time followed by Necropotence. 5 life later, Marco discards a Polluted Delta. Michael plays Volcanic Island, go, with a Library draw somewhere in there.

Maher finds Underground Sea, which jumps into play, and Brainstorm runs into Pyroblast. Mox Ruby, Black Lotus, and Mana Vault all leap into action, and Black Lotus sacrifices to help out a Tendrils of Agony for 12. Marco sets aside 6 cards for Necropotence and discards Timetwister.

Michael draws a couple cards, plays Flooded Strand and Mox Jet, and casts Tinker sacrificing his newly-cast Jet to make a Darksteel Colossus after some lamenting that the card he wanted (Mindslaver) was in his hand. Marco responds to Dark Confidant’s triggered ability with Mystical Tutor for Ranken der Pein (Tendrils of Agony, for you non-German speakers), and Michael concedes.

Game Score: Michael 1, Marco 1

Game 3:
Both players keep their hands once again, and Michael plays Underground Sea, Mox Emerald, Time Walk. On his extra turn, he plays Flooded Strand, Duress. He sees a couple of Brainstorms, some moxes, and a Force of Will, and makes Marco discard Force. Marco’s turn is Mox Sapphire, Brainstorm (seeing triple Tendrils of Agony!), Flooded Strand. Michael sacrifices his Flooded Strand to get Volcanic Island and cast Goblin Welder. Marco sacrifices his strand to get Underground Sea. He draws a card during his draw step and casts yet another Brainstorm. Another Underground Sea later, he plays Imperial Seal and finishes his turn.

Michael plays a second Goblin Welder, attacks with the first one, and is through. Marco plays Ancestral Recall, Polluted Delta, and Michael taps out to hardcast Triskelion. He attacks with one Goblin Welder, and Marco sacrifices Polluted Delta to get Underground Sea to cast Vampiric Tutor.

Marco’s final turn is Mox Emerald, Mana Vault, Dark Ritual, Tendrils.

Game score: Michael 1, Marco 2

Round 3: Jeff Nielson (The Gilded Claw) v. Victor Andersen ()

Victor wins the die roll, and elects to go first.

Game 1:
Victor keeps his first 7, as does Jeff. Victor’s first turn Library of Alexandria runs into Jeff’s first turn Wasteland. Victor’s second turn is Island, Mana Crypt, Sol Ring, Timetwister. The players draw new sets of 7, and do not have the option to mulligan. Victor takes a point of mana burn, plays a Mox Emerald “in case Jeff has a Chalice,” and is done. Jeff plays Wasteland, Chalice for free, go.

Victor’s Mana Crypt neglects to damage him, and he plays a Flooded Strand, and taps his artifact mana for Memory Jar. Jeff plays Gemstone Mine and uses it to play Goblin Welder. On Jeff’s end step, Victor uses his basic island to cast Brainstorm and activates his Memory Jar. Jeff responds to the Memory Jar with Wasteland on Victor’s fetchland, which he sacrifices for Underground Sea, and then plays Gush, returning his two islands.

Memory Jar resolves, and Victor begins his turn with a fresh 7. He takes damage from Mana Crypt, plays a basic island, Time Walks, and goes to his end step, discarding “a bunch of land and a dark ritual.” On his Time Walk turn, he takes damage again, plays and uses Library of Alexandria, and discards Polluted Delta. Jeff takes his turn, draws a card, plays yet another Wasteland, and a Chalice of the Void with 1 counter.

Victor takes damage yet again from his Mana Crypt, draws a card with Library, draws a card for his turn, and plays Dark Confidant. Jeff uses Goblin Welder to transform his Chalice with no counters into a Duplicant (discarded from the earlier Memory Jar) removing The Great One from the game. Still during his own end step, Victor plays Rebuild. Since he now has a large number of cards in his hand, he discards a pair of Mana Drains.

Jeff draws, plays Chalice of the Void (0 counters), uses his Wasteland to kill the Library, and uses up his Gemstone Mine to play a second Welder. Victor uses his turn to play Demonic Tutor, and Jeff uses Victor’s turn to remake Chalice of the Void into Memory Jar.

Jeff’s turn sees him draw yet another Wasteland, and he activates his Memory Jar before playing anything. Victor responds with Brainstorm. Jeff plays Mishra’s Workshop, Darksteel Ingot, Chalice of the Void (0 counters again), and welds his Ingot (floating black mana) into a Memory Jar. He activates the Jar again, and plays a Mana Vault with his floating mana, using it to play Trinisphere, which runs into a Force of Will. After some double-mana-vault shenanigans, the players get back their original hands (a judge was needed to resolve that one), and Jeff welds his Mana Vault into a Sundering Titan, destroying two out of Victor’s three lands.

Victor plays Hurkyl’s Recall targeting Jeff, losing his remaining land, and then dumps Mox Emerald, Mana Crypt, Sol Ring, and is done. Jeff plays Chalice for free, welds it into a Memory Jar, activates Memory Jar, welds his newfound Crucible of Worlds into a Memory Jar again, and activates it again. The players get back their original hands, Victor takes 5 mana burn going to 2, and dies to his own Mana Crypt instead of to Jeff’s Memory Jar decking tech.

Game Score: Jeff 1, Victor 0

Game 2:
Jeff shows me that he has removed his Ancestral Recall in sideboarding, commenting that he “is never going to resolve that…”

Victor elects to play first, after some deliberation having to do with Library of Alexandria being better when he plays second. First he decides that 6 are better than 7, then that 5 are better than 6. His first turn is Polluted Delta, go. Jeff’s first turn is Wasteland, Mana Vault, Crucible of Worlds, which gives Victor pause. It resolves eventually, and Jeff activates Wasteland targeting Victor’s Polluted Delta. Victor sacrifices it to get a basic Island, which Jeff targets with Ghost Quarter (!), giving Victor a second basic Island.

Victor draws into a Hurkyl’s Recall, and returns all of Jeff’s artifacts to his hand. Jeff plays Mana Crypt, which runs into Force of Will, and then a Mana Vault off of a Gemstone Mine, which runs into another Force of Will and empties Victor’s hand. The players play draw go for a few turns until Jeff plays a Goblin Welder which runs into a Mana Drain, which causes Victor to mana burn.

A few more lands and a few more moxes later, Jeff re-casts his Crucible of Worlds, which resolves. Victor plays a Rebuild during the end step, and continues to play draw go. Jeff uses Wasteland on Underground Sea, plays Tolarian Academy, and is done. A few more lands for both players and a couple attacks with Mishra’s Factoroy later, he casts his Crucible of Worlds for the third time. A Ghost Quarter transforms a basic Island into a basic Swamp, and Tolarian Academy plays Wasteland for Victor.

Jeff Tinkers his creature Mishra’s Factory into a Sundering Titan to kill two out of three of Victor’s lands, and Victor has no plays on his turn. Jeff plays a land out of his graveyard and a Triskelion. Victor plays Mana Crypt, announcing that he intends to die to it. Jeff doesn’t allow him to do so, and attacks.

Game Score: Jeff 2, Victor 0

Round 4: Victor Andersen (again!) v. Trevor Leinbach ()

Game 1:
Victor wins the die roll this round too, and elects to play first again. Unlike last round, however, he keeps his first hand of 7. His first turn is Mox Jet, Mox pearl, Mox Sapphire, Flooded Strand, go. Trevor plays Gemstone Mine, go.

Victor’s second turn is Underground Sea, go, and Trevor Crop Rotates his Gemstone mine into… Force of Will hardcast! I love hands with 3 moxes. Trevor’s turn is Black Lotus, get 3 black mana, Cabal Therapy. Victor reveals no Mana Drains, and holds onto Darkblast and Dark Ritual. Victor finishes up with a Putrid Imp and another Gemstone Mine.

On Victor’s turn, he dredges Darkblast, and is done. Trevor draws, plays City of Brass, and Brainstorms with his Gemstone Mine. He attacks with Putrid Imp to take Victor down to 19, and then plays Chalice of the Void (0 counters). Victor draws and plays Dark Confidant which instantly gets Darkblasted. Trevor has a Bazaar of Baghdad, which he plays and activates (discarding Ashen Ghoul and Stinkweed Imp), and Victor plays Draw go. Trevor activates Bazaar during his upkeep, replacing the first draw with dredging Stinkweed Imp hitting another Stinkweed Imp, and then replacing the second draw with a dredge as well, discarding the two imps. His draw for the turn is also an imp dredge, and he attacks for 5 with his Putrid Imp and newly-reanimated Ashen Ghoul.

Victor considers his options, and then goes ahead and draws his card for the turn (Polluted Delta). Trevor responds to his ichorid trigger by using Bazaar to dredge two Golgari Grave-Trolls, returns an Ichorid and an Ashen Ghoul, and then draws his card for the turn. An attack for 8 later, Trevor sacrifices Ichorid to Cabal Therapy away Victor’s Dark Ritual, and Victor draws another land to lose the game.

Game Score: Trevor 1, Victor 0

Game 2:
Victor’s first turn is Sea, Mox Jet, Mox Sapphire, Tormod’s Crypt, Tinker on Jet for Darksteel Colossus. Trevor, not to be beaten so easily, plays Chain of Vapor on the Colossus. Victor Vampiric Tutors on his upkeep for Ancestral Recall, and is done. Trevor plays Careful Study and discards Stinkweed Imp and Ichorid, and Victor draws 3 at the end of the turn.

Victor rips a Yawgmoth’s Will off the top, plays a basic Island, and is done. Trevor removes his imp from the game to return Ichorid to play, and attacks into Darkblast. He uses up his Gemstone Mine to play Brainstorm, and casts Chrome Mox, which resolves, and he removes Golgari Grave-Troll from the game. He plays a second Gemstone Mine, and casts Imperial Seal. The chrome mox taps for green mana to cast Pithing Needle, which resolves and prevents use of Tormod’s Crypt.

Victor’s turn is Underground Sea, Demonic Tutor, Pithing Needle on Bazaar of Baghdad. Trevor plays draw go, and Victor casts Brainstorm. He draws 2, and dredges Darkblast for the 3rd card. After doing some math on his note paper and examining his graveyard closely, he casts Yawgmoth’s Will. He plays Mox Jet and Tolarian Academy from his graveyard, taps for 4 blue mana and 1 black, plays Demonic Tutor from his graveyard, a Black Lotus from his hand, a Hurkyl’s Recall targeting himself, and replays his Mox Jet, Mox Pearl, Tormod’s Crypt, and Black Lotus. He plays Vampiric Tutor out of his graveyard, Ancestral Recall out of his graveyard, and Tendrils of Agony.

Game Score: Trevor 1, Victor 1

Game 3:
Trevor plays turn 1 Bazaar, and discards Ashen Ghoul, Chrome Mox, and Gemstone Mine. He ends it with Mox Sapphire. Victor’s turn is Mox jet, Underground Sea, Lotus Petal, Pithing Needle (Bazaar of Baghdad). The needle is immediately the target of Chain of Vapor. Another Bazaar activation dumps Vampiric Tutor, Lotus Petal, and Bazaar number 2. Careful Study discarding Putrid Imp and City of Brass precede a second in-play Bazaar dumping Black Lotus and Ashen Ghoul and a Mox Jet to end the turn.

Victor immediately replays Pithing Needle on Bazaar, and a Polluted Delta. Trevor’s free Chalice of the Void resolves, and Victor plays Dark Confidant on his turn. Trevor plays draw go, and Victor takes 0 to draw an extra swamp on his upkeep, attacks, plays the swamp, and is done. Trevor plays draw go again, while Victor Brainstorms, draws an extra Tormod’s Crypt, which is countered, and Trevor resolves Chain of Vapor on Victor’s Pithing Needle for the second time this game.

Trevor untaps, draws a card for the turn, and plays Chalice of the Void with 1 counter. He then activates Bazaar and discards Putrid Imp, Stinkweed Imp, Putrid Imp. A second activation dumps Ichorid and Gemstone Mine. On Trevor’s end step, Victor plays Echoing Truth on the chalices.

Victor begins his turn by losing 1 life to get a Brainstorm. He then attacks, plays a basic island, Hurkyl’s Recalls himself, replays his Lotus Petal, Mox Jet, and Sol Ring, Demonic Tutors for Tendrils of Agony, Chain of Vapors his three artifacts, replays them, and plays Tendrils for plenty.

Game Score: Trevor 1, Victor 2

The top 4 players at the end of the swiss are:
David Ochoa (TPS with Dark Confidant)
Victor Andersen (TPS with Dark Confidant)
Marco Barreno (TPS with Dark Confidant)
Jeff Neilson (The Gilded Crrraaaaaawwww)

Semifinals: David Ochoa (TPS with Confidant) v. Victor Andersen (TPS with Confidant)

David wins the die roll and elected to play first.

Game 1:
David keeps his first 7, and Victor decides to mulligan to 6. David’s first turn is Underground Sea, Dark Ritual, Duress into a hand of land, land, Mox Sapphire, Ancestral Recall, Yawgmoth’s Will. David elects to force Victor to discard the Ancestral Recall, and then plays Mox Ruby, Mana Vault, Dark Confidant, Dark Confidant, burn for 1. David takes damage for Sol Ring and Timetwister, attacks for 4, and plays Brainstorm, basic island, and Sol Ring.

Victor’s second turn is Polluted Delta go, and David’s turn sees him taking damage for Dark Ritual and no damage for Black Lotus, attacking for 4 again, and Duressing Victor for the second time of the game. This time, he takes out the Yawgmoth’s Will and sees Dark Ritual as the only exceptional new card. He drops Black Lotus and says he’s done. Victor sacrifices his Delta during David’ end step for a Sea, and goes ahead with his turn, which is a land, go.

David’s next turn is drawing extra Polluted Delta and Dark Confidant, attacking for 4 (taking Victor to 7), and saying go.

Jeff Nielson won game 1 against Marco Barreno.

Victor plays land go again, and David draws a Tendrils to end it.

Game Score: Victor 0, David 1

Game 2:
David jokes that he will choose to draw, and Victor ponders a hand of Colossus, Tinker, Island, Island, Black Lotus, Tolarian Academy, and Ancestral Recall, which he keeps. David also keeps. Victor’s first turn is Tolarian Academy, Black Lotus, go. David gets an Underground Sea with his Polluted Delta, and plays Cabal Therapy for Brainstorm, which misses, but sees Colossus, Tinker, Force of Will, Mox Emerald, two Islands, and a Polluted Delta. He finishes it up with an Ancestral Recall off of a Lotus Petal and a Black Lotus for a second Cabal Therapy (Tinker) and a Dark Confidant.

Victor’s turn is an unimpressive Mox Emerald, Lotus Petal, Polluted Delta, go, and David draws a Yawgmoth’s Will with his Confidant. He continues with Island, Brainstorm, Duress (Force of Will).

Victor savagely rips a Yawgmoth’s Will with great disregard for my artistic integrity, which he casts using his Black Lotus. He then replays his Black Lotus and taps his Academy to play Ancestral Recall, Brainstorm, Sol Ring, Tinker for Memory Jar, Underground Sea, Brainstorm, Demonic Tutor. He responds to his own Demonic Tutor by activating Memory Jar. David plays Force of Will on the tutor, to Victor’s dismay. Victor then plays Mana Crypt, sacrifices his Black Lotus for black mana to Darkblast David’s confidant and then play a pair of his own Great Ones.

During David’s upkeep, he plays Mystical Tutor for Dark Ritual, and uses it to cast Yawgmoth’s Will with a spectacularly full graveyard.

Game Score: Victor 0, David 2

Jeff Nielson defeated Marco Barreno 2 games to 1 and the finals was an anticlimactic prize-splitting arrangement between David and Jeff.

"and playing Meddling Mage, which names “Ichorid.”"

" He taps Sol Ring to play Pithing Needle naming Cabal Therapy, "

What a Scrub!!!!

And to think Austin won a Mox Sapphire at the last tourmament he played in. NooB!

(Austin is still part of Team Vacaville and has won MORE dollar value in cards than ALMOST all the other Powerwinning members of Team Vacaville (Myself-Mox Pearl, Eudemonia 1 2005, Split Mox Jet Eudemonia 4 2006), Alex Block-TimeTwister AND Library of Alexandria, Andy Gonzales (or something)-Split Mox Ruby, Austin "scrubby McSuck" Martinez- Mox Sapphire ProStar Sapphire Tourney 2006)

That was a fun tournament. The coverage doesn't really do justice to how silly my match vs. Jeff was and how horrible my repeated misplays were. Thank god I only made huge misplays on irrelevant cards... well, except of course for the lotus petal I forgot to sac in response to yawg will in the semi finals game 2, where if I had that extra mana I would have been able to play the bargain I got from my memory jar.

oops.

I agree, Austin could have done better picking cards to name for Meddling Mage and Pithing Needle. However, to imageine that Jonathan would have lost the game had he chosen better would be to impugn his play skills, which are excellent.

Victor, you just nailed the trouble with combo decks: the tiny things matter. Why do you think I stopped playing type one? [Razz]

Well, that's the good thing about high variance decks like tendrils combo. Yes, the little things matter a lot sometimes, but there are just as many situations where no matter how badly you screw up the math you can still win easily. Hooray for broken cards!

Yes, I remember one match in which I was playing Draw-7, back in its heyday, against Jeff, who was playing the salvagers combo deck. I had a completely ridiculous hand of Black Lotus, Gemstone Mine, Dark Ritual, Demonic Tutor, Yawgmoth's Bargain, Mana Vault. He was going to need a pair of FoW to stop me from winning on the first turn. Fortunately for him, he had them [Razz]

In this case, my busted hand says you DON'T win turn 1 due to my 2 Force +2 Pitchable Blue cards.

That is different from saying "I win".

That is reserved for Mox+Orchard+Oath+Force+Force+Brainstorm+Ancestral hands.
